General description_x000D_
A disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs 12 is an enzyme encoded by the ADAMTS12 gene in humans. It belongs to the family of metalloproteinases that helps in mediating a communication between specific cell types and plays a key role in the regulation of normal tissue development, remodeling and degradation._x000D_

ADAMTS12 is a degradative enzyme that interacts with the degradable fragments of cartilage oligomeric matrix protein, which is a prominent non-collagenous matrix component in articular cartilage. The protein exhibits a propeptide and metalloproteinase-like, disintegrin-like cysteine-rich domains. It may play a crutial role in pulmonary cells during fetal development or in tumor processes through its proteolytic activity or as a molecule potentially involved in regulation of cell adhesion. ADAMTS12 is found in cartilage, synovial fluid and serum of arthritic patients and may play an important role in the pathogenesis of arthritis. It may be a susceptibile gene for rheumatoid arthritis development. The genetic variations in ADAMTS12 is found to influence the risk of schizophrenia.
