It suppresses transfer of ribosomal protein L11 to the nucleoplasm. In the nucleoplasm, L11 inhibits E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase, MDM2 (Mouse double minute 2), resulting in p53 activation. In presence of ribosomal stress GLTSCR2 moves to the nucleoplasm and stabilizes p53, thereby inhibiting cell cycle progression. GLTSCR2 plays an important role in cellular respiration. GLTSCR2 is down-regulated in cervical cancer, squamous cell carcinoma, prostatic adenocarcinoma and breast cancer.
