Description_x000D_ General description_x000D_ Opioid related nociceptin receptor 1 (OPRL1) is mapped to human chromosome 20q13.33. The gene codes for the nociceptin/orphanin FQ receptor (NOP-R), which is a G protein-coupled receptor expressed at various levels all over the brain and spinal cord. OPRL1 belongs to the opioid receptor family._x000D_ The protein encoded by this gene is a G protein-coupled receptor whose expression can be induced by phytohemagglutinin. The encoded integral membrane protein is a receptor for the 17 aa neuropeptide nociceptin/orphanin FQ. This gene may be involved in the regulation of numerous brain activities, particularly instinctive and emotional behaviors. A promoter for this gene also functions as a promoter for another gene, regulator of G-protein signalling 19 (RGS19), located on the opposite strand. Two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been found for this gene. The encoded protein is involved in regulating tolerance and behavioral responses to morphine. Phosphorylation of NOPR at serine 363 by G protein-coupled receptor kinase 3 (GRK3) facilitates arrestin-dependent Jun amino-terminal kinases (JNK) mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling. Mutation in the gene is associated with the risk to develop opiate addiction.
