Accumulation of extracellular excitatory amino acids can be cytotoxic and may also lower the seizure threshold in epilepsy. The protein also has a role in active and passive water transport. Mutations in the gene encoding SLC1A3 have been linked to episodic ataxia type 6 (EA6).
